I’m revamping my kitchen and with this a decision has to be made about lighting. I had given lighting a passing thought but naively I had assumed it would be straight forward, I was wrong, especially when you do not wish to use LED bulbs. The electricians I have spoken to advise the use of LED lighting now, in fact there is no other choice, and yes it uses less energy but it appears that it does have another side to it that we are not made aware of.
This week I read Dr Mercola’s blog on the subject, he and his team are one of the world’s biggest bloggers on all things to do with health. His conclusion was that yes there were concerns over the use of LEDs regarding health but he saw the environmental and energy benefits to their use too, as I do. Because of this however I decided to do some investigating myself and found that some people in the business actually believe that when it comes to saving money it’s ‘kidology’ and that the amount of money saved over a 10 year period is negligible as the cost is so much more to begin with.
I’m no expert on this subject as you can tell and it has caused some confusion as well as frustration for me this week just trying to get to the bottom of it all. For the moment I have decided to stick with halogen, and I also have a stack of the incandescent bulbs because I foresaw this issue, and my thought is ‘why spend yet more money on something I don’t yet need to replace’.
As this subject is a little too technical for me to write about here’s Dr Mercola’s link, it’s certainly worth a read.
