It’s a relatively new concept that the gut is connected with depression. Most people don’t realise that what they think and what they feel has an effect on their gut and this is known as the ‘Gut Brain Connection’.
Gut bacteria, also known as microbiota, weighs 1-2 kg and are thought to number 100 trillion. Many believe this important gut bacteria should be called another ‘organ’ because it has the capacity to alter so many systems in the body, including the Central Nervous System.
Stress, diet and the environment causes the pH in our gut to alter. When this happens it has a negative effect on the gut lining and the good bacteria that live there. This causes a cycle of inflammation and destruction resulting in sickness, disease and not uncommonly depression.
Healing the gut lining is paramount but it takes time to achieve. Stool and blood tests would be advisable to find out exactly what is going on and this can be done with the help of a good practitioner.
